GRAY MATTER

We are currently accepting submissions for our January 2026 edition.

A Literary Magazine

Gray Matter is an online-based literary publication. We publish literary essays, short fiction, poetry, grayscale photography, and striking visual art that travel the mind and speak to the soul.

Each edition, you’ll experience written and visual work by contemplative voices that value depth over speed and sincerity over spectacle. Our contributors write from experience, from study, and from stillness — offering work that lingers, asks questions, and honors complexity. The kind of storytelling that invites reflection and resonance. This is a quiet place for slow attention in a fast-paced world, for thoughts that take time and deserve our undivided attention.

Who We Are

Founded in 2025 by writer and publisher Erika L. Block, Gray Matter extends from a lifelong fascination with the layered nature of the human experience. It is published independently by Gray House Publishing, a literary companion to her esoteric non-fiction magazine, THE GRAY. It is edited by Dominic Breiter, an accomplished writer and the creator of flyover fiction. The artwork we feature is curated by artist and art educator, Jonathan Fritsch.

A Reader-Supported Space

Gray Matter is ad-free, algorithm-free, and reader-supported. We are not interested in trending, optimizing, or maximizing. We are interested in making something that lasts. If you find value in our work, consider becoming a conscious supporter to help keep Gray Matter alive, quiet, and independent.

A Print Anthology

At the end of each completed year, we will print a stunning curated collection of our most resonant work — a tactile artifact of the ideas and stories that defined our shared year — a volume meant to be kept, shared, and revisited over time. We hope that you will consider purchasing a copy to help us continue for years to come.
